Inspire thought for May

Champions aren't made in gyms.  Champions are made from something they have deep inside them:  A desire, a dream, a vision.  They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will.  But the will must be stronger than the skill.  ~ Muhammad Ali

Our Today is Forever

Plastic, a petroleum derivative - from production and distribution to pollution and consumption - set to Queen's Who Wants To Live Forever.

Plastic is a petroleum derivative, and is as bad for the marine and biological environment as oil is. Not completely inert, plastic breaks offgass and photodegrade to the molecular level. Because they are synthetic molecules, they are large and they clog the biological systems they get into.

My Giving Moment

Every Canadian has something to give, whether it's big or small.  Opportunities to give are all around us, every day. We call them “Giving Moments”. The more we act on them, the better and more caring Canada will become.

My Giving Moment will help more Canadians discover what they have to give. It will inspire millions of us to say, “Hey, I’m going to do that!” And we’ll have a stronger, more compassionate nation that we can all be proud of – a nation that values helping others and giving back to the community.

How to grow a National Park in your backyard

The David Suzuki Foundation is creating a green corridor through the heart of Toronto with the help of 21 Neighbourhood Park Rangers and 14 amazing partner groups. This Homegrown team is bringing nature home to the city by spurring businesses, individuals and institutions to grow more green space this summer.

"Inspired by authors Richard Louv and Douglas Tallamy, in 2013 we embarked on a mission to establish the world's first "Homegrown National Park" by crowd-sourcing a vibrant green corridor along the former path of Garrison Creek, in the City of Toronto's downtown west end.

In the project's first year, our eager team of volunteer Homegrown Park Rangers spurred more than a dozen creative green interventions, from pothole planters and canoe gardens to butterfly friendly schoolyards and "parkify-ing" a residential street.

In 2014 we have expanded the project to adjacent neighbourhoods throughout the Garrison Creek corridor, and recruited and trained another two dozen amazing Homegrown Park Rangers that live, work and play in the area."

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution

Jamie demonstrates how 70% of America's ground beef contains leftover cow parts (a.k.a. "pink slime") containing e.coli and salmonella that has been treated with ammonia. Ammonia treated meat can be found in virtually all conventional grocery stores, fast food restaurants, many national restaurant chains, and school cafeterias.

The Story of Solutions

The Story of Solutions explores how we can move our economy in a more sustainable and just direction, starting with orienting ourselves toward a new goal.

In the current 'Game of More', we're told to cheer a growing economy -- more roads, more malls, more Stuff! -- even though our health indicators are worsening, income inequality is growing and polar icecaps are melting.

But what if we changed the point of the game? What if the goal of our economy wasn't more, but better -- better health, better jobs and a better chance to survive on the planet?

Shouldn't that be what winning means?
